Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that can cause inflammation, ovarian cysts, and abnormal hair growth, among other symptoms. A 2019 study revealed that 33% to 83% of women with PCOS are either overweight or obese. Because of this, dietary modifications are often recommended to help regulate weight and maintain hormonal balance. To manage PCOS symptoms effectively, it is important to be mindful of your diet. Below are ten foods that individuals with PCOS should avoid. However, always consult a doctor or nutritionist before making major dietary changes.

1. Processed Meats

Highly processed meats such as hot dogs, sausages, and deli meats contain excessive amounts of sodium, nitrates, and saturated fats. These components contribute to inflammation and unwanted weight gain, which can worsen PCOS symptoms. Instead, opt for lean meats like turkey and chicken, or consume omega-3-rich fish like salmon and mackerel to promote reproductive health.

2. Red Meat

Excessive consumption of red meat can increase inflammation and lower progesterone levels. Fatty cuts of beef, including hamburgers and steaks, may contribute to worsening PCOS symptoms. For better hormone regulation, choose leaner meats, preferably organic or grass-fed, which contain fewer unhealthy fats.

3. Refined Carbohydrates

Refined carbs, such as white bread, white rice, pastries, and processed potatoes, can cause rapid blood sugar spikes and crashes. Women with PCOS are already at a higher risk of developing diabetes, making it essential to limit their intake of these foods.
