Doctor highlights increasing challenge of treating gonorrhea due to rising antibiotic resistance

Gonorrhea: Who’s Most at Risk and What to Look Out For
Dr. Bhavini Shah, a sexual health expert and GP at LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor, shares key insights into who is vulnerable to gonorrhea and how to recognize it:

“Gonorrhea can affect anyone who is sexually active. However, individuals who frequently change sexual partners or do not consistently use barrier protection methods, such as condoms, are at higher risk.”

This sexually transmitted infection (STI) is most commonly spread through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Sharing sex toys can also transmit the infection if proper hygiene and protection aren’t used. Dr. Shah emphasizes the importance of using barrier methods like condoms or dental dams and cleaning sex toys thoroughly or covering them with a fresh condom when sharing.

Symptoms typically develop within two weeks of exposure.
For women, signs may include:

  • Unusual vaginal discharge (yellow, green, watery)

  • Pain or burning while urinating

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Bleeding between periods, after sex, or heavier periods

For men, symptoms can include:

  • Unusual discharge from the penis (white, yellow, or green)

  • Painful urination

  • Swollen foreskin

  • Testicular pain (less common)

Dr. Shah warns, “About 1 in 10 men and up to 50% of women may not show any noticeable symptoms, which is why regular STI screenings are essential—especially for those at higher risk.”

Prompt treatment is critical. If left untreated, gonorrhea can cause serious health complications. In rare cases, it can infect the eyes or lead to reproductive issues. During pregnancy, it increases the risk of miscarriage, early delivery, or even blindness in the newborn.
