Antidepressants May Accelerate Cognitive Decline in Dementia Patients: Study
Stockholm: A new study suggests that antidepressants could speed up cognitive decline in individuals with dementia. The research, conducted in Sweden, analyzed data from nearly 19,000 dementia patients, of whom 23% were prescribed antidepressants for depression.
According to the findings, patients who took antidepressants experienced faster cognitive decline compared to those who did not. The study also highlighted that certain types of antidepressants may contribute more significantly to this decline than others.
While researchers acknowledge that depression itself can worsen cognitive deterioration, the study raises concerns about the potential impact of antidepressant medications on dementia progression.
Dementia remains a major global health challenge, affecting millions of people. Scientists continue to explore early detection methods, advanced treatment options, and strategies to slow disease progression. The latest findings underscore the need for further investigation into the role of antidepressants in dementia management.
